Scientists often forget that most science starts as a hunch or an intuition. One open minded person has an intuition and decides to investigate. Gee whiz, he discovers something. Others get excited and a whole new area to explore evolves. Soon it is forgotten that the original investigation was on a hunch, an intuition.
First the guy is crazy. Then he is condemned. Then, because the discovery works, or is undeniable, he is accepted. A few years down the road it is completely forgotten that some brave soul followed a hunch, an intuition.Thirst tells us there is water. Hunger tells us there is food. The search for meaning tells us there is a God.
